Source Code on the move
I would like to welcome everybody to our todays episode on Realm Crafter Standard.
Today I would like to talk about an often forgotten aspect of RC Standard, that is its source availability and how the hidden talents in the community can be unleashed to drive the technology further.
I‘ve been part of the RC Standard community already since the days it wasn‘t even Realm Crafter, before Solstar Games was its developer. That was in the old days of MMORPG CE, the users from that time were later the „79ers“ (the original 79 users), most of them today have the Beta Tester rank on the RC Standard community.
MMORPG CE was basically a barebone online RPG with source code which offered interested developers with little experience in the field of multiplayer game development and needed a platform to start off with or as in my case, users that just wanted to support interesting movements within the Blitz3D community.
The special thing about it was that it really was all about source code usage and users communicated regularily with each other to share their findings and ideas on how to enhance specific things or fix issues found, sharing them with each other and future releases of the product.
A lot has changed since then.
With Solstar Games taking over the technology originally but then creating an all new one (RC Standard), the move to editor driven creation and a focus on allowing non coders to work with it, the source usage has been forgotten or avoided by many users.
That is partly caused by the fact that most are no programmers in any way while the other reason is that the sources are not small and take a fair amount of time to learn where to find what and where what requires to be changed or the used solution for a problem just isn‘t easy to understand, leading to frustration.
I‘m happy to say though that not all have decided to not use the sources. Especially over the recent months the opposite has started to happen, with more and especially more active developers joining the source development, bringing new life and new ideas onto the plate.
Driven by and driving that new spirit and interest, I am here today to talk more about how this movement can grow and encourage more users to join the ranks of source developers.
Community Communication
Communication is vital for our whole life. Without communication, humans wouldn‘t be able to survive at all, be it verbal or written communication.
As everywhere, the communication should be respectfull because we are all just humans independent of our personal strengths and our attitude.
For programmers, communication though has more than just the normal „talk“ layer, because requirements for code and products are expressed through communication as well, which not rarely leads to problems.
The normal spoken-written languages are not precise in their meaning, many things can have 2 and more meanings depending on the point of view applied.
This ambiquity can be a very large problem when achieving a common goal basing on communicated targets.
This can lead to missunderstadings, frustration at worst even to fights between developers about „failures“ of one when they forget about the ambiquity. Its important that aspiring developers learn the base vocabulary of the field as fast as possible so they become capable to communicate in a precise way using this standard vocabulary.
Community Feedback & Appreciation
If one invests his sparetime into something for himself and especially others, he expects to get at least a basic reaction on the work resulting from these time investments.
Feedback is a strong instrument to drive or destroy desire of a person to work on something, even of a whole movement.
For this reason feedback, be it positive or a constructive critism, should always be respectful and objective targeted on the work.
Most people are also happy and additionally motivated if their hard work is appreciated by fellow comrades using it.
This appreciation can happen through different ways, with the most common one being something as simple yet impacting as „Thank you for your work“.
People that invested a lot of time but are not appreciated will potentially lose their interest to share future work at all anymore, as even among developers the plague of „leechers“ exists and grows (leechers are people that take and take and take but never give anything back, be it own work, other usefull assets or just a donation in financial / coupon form)
Community Spirit & Dedication
The last two important points I would like to cover in todays episode on the topic of the RC Standard Source Movement are the importance of dedication and spirit within such a community driven movement.
Independent of how good the communication and feedback between single developers is, the general community spirit and dedication have a large impact on the motivation of all.
The two things are often linked, with the community movement and its spirit being driven by dedication of a few who are motivated by the spirit.
Dedicated members help to keep the movement alive and drive it further even in hard times, which motivates less active members to join them on their path, be it only for a while or only for minor source work.
None the less these users that join are important, as they support the movement and provide ideas, feedback and talent, raising the spirit among the whole movement, which will raise the motivation and thus the dedication of the movement.
I hope I‘ve been able to show the importance of various aspects on the drive of a community movement with a slight spin towards the RC Standard source community.
If you would like to read more about the RC Standard Source movement in special, please visit the following thread in the RC Standard Source userboards (you need to be a source group member to have access to the board): http://realmcrafter.com/private/viewtopic.php?t=29083 or http://www.realmcrafter.com/private/viewtopic.php?t=29083
Which one of the two is the right one depends on your board adress you use to login. Should you use the www.realmcrafter then its the later, otherwise its the first one.
